David Fowles
David Fowles was Born in Shrewsbury in 1949. He initially trained as a civil engineer before going on to teach religion and art, and later paint full time. As
a young man David Fowles was a keen fisherman and spent many days playing on the banks of the River Severn. This setting has been the inspiration for his paintings, predominantly landscapes and river scenes.
David explains The River Severn plays an important role as an attachment to my childhood memories. 'Recapturing the views and atmosphere of the countryside is my true inspiration'.
David Fowles's subjects are landscapes executed in oils on canvas. He takes inspiration from the great impressionistic artists such as Claude Monet 1840-1926 and Alfred Sisley 1839-1899. Always painting outside, never from photographs.
David believes a landscape must be painted before the motif, the flux, movement changes are what landscapes painting is all about.
A piece from David Fowles:
"I am a landscape painter with over 30 years experience. What interests me is the transient, the changing light, the freshness of nature, so all my landscapes are painted outdoors, before the actual motif, rather than from photographs. Not surprisingly I have been influenced and inspired by authors who also felt that a direct experience of nature was essential to their art - Corot, the Impressionists and Constable.
The landscape of Shropshire is obviously important to me but recently I have also worked in North Wales and along the North Norfolk coast, and over the next year it is my intention to explore other landscapes in the UK. All my paintings are oil on canvas."
