Edwin Penny

Edwin Penny was born in Bristol in 1930. He studied at Bath College of Art and the Royal West of England Academy. He then gained an apprenticeship as a lithographic artist at a local printing company.

Between 1951-1953, he served with the Royal Tank Regiment in Hong Kong.
Whilst serving, he won a government art competition and was awarded a six-month tuition art course under a Chinese art master.
Penny’s work was heavily influenced with Chinese elements, merging these ideas into his own work. He particularly used the technique which was developed from his studies, was to use a simple wash background and then highlighted the main subjects in great detail.

Edwin Penny exhibited in Bristol, London and New York. Pennys’ ornithology works are highly collectable and held in private collections around the world.
